Virtual Private LAN service – VPLS
VPLS is a layer 2 VPN architecture which was designed for multipoint connectivity and broadcast capability.
Enterprisees who wish to appear connected on the same LAN segment can use this service.
Enterprise CE switches connect to PE routers who are enabled for VPLS. When you configure VPLS on a PE you are effectivley creating a virtual switch inside the router. CEs connect to the virtual switch via attachment circuits. In a single VPLS domain you may have multiple PEs ie multiple virtual switches connected together using pseudowires.
I’ve tried to explain the concept of VPLS using the diagram below.

There is a way to
trick EoMPLS to behave as VPLS
Key To Consider
- How VPLS work
- How EoMPLS work
- Spanning Tree (MST)
- Full Mesh
and you can tie EoMPLS
to use certain path on the network using MPLS-TE

Hi Weiping
Thats an interesting idea, I guess that would mean you could provision the VPLS service even if your network doesnt support VPLS.
Technologies can be deployed in various ways and I am all for creativity. However it is important to understand whether the creativity is based on mature technologies or bugs which Cisco may fix in later releases of software.
I have seen cases where IOS allowed you to do something due to a bug and engineers built on that premise only to find when they upgraded their code, their solution no longer worked as the bug had been fixed.
However not all cases are like that and their is always room for creativity. Take the example of RTBH, a sound pratice was developed based on several other technologies and has been deployed world wide.
Anyway, if you have a video or syntax, please feel free to share it with us.

Hi Zarar,
Thank you
We did it in the past in our proof of concept Lab where we did not have 7600 SIP/SPA modules that support VPLS and Network Production team wants to know if
VPLS is the right choice for them
to do Multiple Data Center Redundancy.

I have never seen a diagram before which can explain everything without configuration.
Really a good job!!!
Keep it up.
